David Small is a 2007 left hand pitcher from Benicia HS, residing in Benicia, CA. Small has a long, loose, projectable body type with a 6'5" 190 lb. frame. There are a number of things to like about Small, both presently and in the future, earning him a #52 ranking among PG National Top 85 pitchers. He pitches from a 3/4 slot with a loose arm and a sling type arm action. He has a pretty fast arm that as he gains more physical size should start really allowing him to climb in velocity. There are a lot of moving parts in Small's delivery, giving the hitter a lot to watch and become distracted by. Though he has all those moving parts, Small does a pretty nice job of staying on time with the delivery and keeping on line direction to the plate. His fastball was in the upper 80s and his arm side movement was as good as anyone's at PG National. His sinker is going to get a lot of ground balls and swing overs. Small's 68-71 mph curveball at times shows big and lively action and other times is average, an indication that he needs more body control so he can feel the ball better out front. When he is consistently on time all his stuff moves. Small also has plus feel of his 74 mph change-up. His body type and arm speed suggest that he will continue to make incremental velocity jumps as the years go by and he should not have to increase his effort on the mound to get it out of his arm. Though he is a primary pitcher, Small can handle bat a bit and if he heads to college he could develop as offensive player at 1B. He ran 7.83 in the 60. Small is committed to Saint Mary's College (CA) and for the most part looks college bound, but big rangy lefties with his movement and physical projectability do not grow on trees, meaning that the area scouts are going to go in and take a few looks this spring.
