2003 National Showcase
The Longfellow we saw at the PG National looked like a classic drop and drive pitcher, a sub group of hurler that one doesn’t see much of today. Longfellow has a strong 6-2, 200 Tom Seaver type build, with mature hips and thighs. When he keeps the ball down in the zone, Longfellow looks very difficult to hit. His fastball was between 87-90 mph and he maintained his velocity well, getting some sinking action and working the corners. Longfellow’s arm works well with his delivery and it’s easy to see him adding some velocity with maturity. His curveball had good velocity and some sharp bite at 74-76 mph and was also very effective low in the zone. As with most drop and drive type pitchers, when Longfellow gets the ball up, it’s flat and very hittable and the hitters in Lincoln reacted accordingly to the high stuff. Look for Longfellow to be followed closely by MLB scouts and top college programs. He's got a chance to be a very good professional pitcher down the road. Dale is an excellent student..
