Matt Merkel is a 2023 OF/LHP with a 5-11 160 lb. frame from Lynbrook, NY who attends Malverne Senior. Merkel works out of a medium projectable frame with additional room to fill out and add strength. From the OF, he displayed a compact arm action with smoother transitions and reliable glove work. Throws were consistently on the bag up to 73 mph. On the mound, the lefty got into a fuller arm action releasing from an over the top slot to work downhill and throw strikes. He peppered the outer half of the zone with success, mixing a 1-7 shaped curveball with big shape as well as a changeup that killed spin effectively. Offensively, Merkel started from an even base with compact hand speed that produced consistent line drive contact. Expect power potential to continue developing in the future, posting an exit velo of 73 mph. Ran a 7.29 sixty yard dash. Good student.
