Matthew Sheffield is a 2023 1B/RHP, UT with a 6-1 160 lb. frame from Tuscaloosa, AL who attends Tuscaloosa Academy. He ran a 7.44 second sixty. A primary first baseman with a long lean build and room to fill moving forward. At first base he does a nice job of fielding the ball out front before making a clean transfer and accurate throw not eh double play feeds to second base, the footwork could speed up be he shows a good feel for the mechanics of the position. On the mound he sat 76-79 mph with his fastball form a higher arm slot with a medium arm circle in the back, when the fastball missed it was high as he got under the ball, he made the adjustment and settled into the zone with extension out front, he has some feel fo the spin of the curveball with 11-5 shape in the upper 60's and was able to land it in the zone. At the plate, he starts his right-handed swing with a upright stance, he creates some separation with a leg lift stride and deep hand loud, the barrel path is short to the ball with a long finish as he does a nice job getting the hips cleared, looking to pull the ball and does when the front shoulder stays in. Good student.
