Drew Rico is a 2019 LHP/1B with a 6-1 210 lb. frame from Menifee, CA who attends Paloma Valley. Large frame with broad shoulders and a strong build. Primary left handed pitcher with a simple side step to high leg lift delivery. Stays tall and balanced on back side at gather. Creates front side swing while working to the plate with drop and drive lower half actions. Hides baseball well at take back with a compact arm circle and released from a three-quarters arm slot. Fastball had some downhill angle through the zone with solid life in the mid 70's to low 80's, topped at 81 miles per hour. Maintained arm speed with a slider offering that had tight spin with sharp tilt in the upper 60's. Showed good feel for each pitch with the ability to work to each edge of the plate. Aggressively attacked hitters and induced weak contact throughout each inning of work. Also worked out defensively from first base showing smooth paced, deliberate footwork while centering the baseball. Clean glove actions while funneling from a slightly deeper position. Topped at 78 miles per hour across the infield creating accurate carry to the bag. Left handed hitter with an upright, open stance and high back elbow set. Works to a tall front side at contact with lower half. Loose hand path to contact with a level plane through extension. Primarily utilized a gap to gap approach and flashed solid jump off the barrel when squared. Named to the 2017 Sunshine West Showcase Top Prospect List. Excellent student.
