2005 National Underclass Dec 28-30
James Goulet is a 2007 3B/1B/P from Cooper City HS in Cooper City, FL, with a 6'0'', 185 lb. frame. He has a mature build and some present strength. Goulet ran the 60 in 7.82 and threw 71 mph during infield drills. He profiles at first base at the next level defensively. Goulet hits from a crouched stance with tight hands to his body. He showed some hand strength and quickness in getting the bat started. He tends to get out on his front side very quickly and hit off his front foot. When Goulet stayed back on the ball he showed a nice line drive swing plane and some bat speed. Goulet also pitched and showed some promise for an unusual reason. Knuckleballs are usually a novelty item at the showcase level but Goulet had an interesting combination of knuckleball ability, arm strength and pitchability. His 65 mph knuckleball had some dance to it and he controlled it well. Goulet has a short, quick arm stroke and the combination of that and his knuckleball made his 80 mph fastball look pretty quick. He also threw a 74 mph slider that wasn't a bad pitch, either. Based on what we saw Goulet should keep throwing and developing the knuckleball in conjunction with his other pitches, you never know. Goulet is a very good student.
