Garrett Tyler (Ty) Johnson is a 2020 LHP/C, 1B with a 6-2 185 lb. frame from Virginia Beach, VA who attends Norfolk Christian Schools. Primary pitcher with a large frame, sloped shoulders and athletic build, room to fill, 7.47 runner in the 60. Easy effort delivery with a full over-the-head wind up, creates hip turn at the top of a higher leg lift and maintains solid direction to the plate. Shorter arm circle in the back with a 3/4 arm slot that creates arm side run. Cuts off extension through release limiting the ability to reach the glove side of the plate consistently. Fastball sits in the upper 60's-to-low-70's, topping at 75 mph. Curveball shows more top-to-bottom movement with slight 11/5 shape, flashing depth at times. Moves well at first base with quick feet, plays below the ball with soft hands, unloads throws from the side but shows accuracy and an ability to start the double play quickly. Hits from a wide base with a high hand and back elbow set up. Pull side power approach at the plate with lift in the swing path. Lacks any real weight shift into contact but has extreme torque in the swing with present strength. Raw power is present and consistently showed the ability to find the barrel with leverage at contact. Presently grades higher as a hitter. Good student.
