2005 Atlantic Coast Top Prospect Showcase
Small is a 6-6, 190 lb senior left handed pitcher from North Carolina with an extremely projectable pitcher's body. He's the one the scout's pick as the prospect coming off the bus. Small throws from a slow paced delivery with good balance and direction to the plate. He has a smooth, extended arm stroke with very good arm speed and extension out front. There really isn't much with Small's delivery to tinker with or change right now, which is unusual in a big, young pitcher. Small's fastball was consistently 82-83 mph. To see how loose and quick his arm was you'd think he'd be throwing mid to upper 80's right now and there isn't much doubt that that kind of velocity at least is in Small's arm. Small threw a 68-70 mph curveball that had sharp spin and bite but he rarely used it. It's a good pitch that can be a weapon for him if he shows it more. Small also threw an occasional 75 mph change up. Overall this is an impressive young talent who is just waiting to blossom and it could happen soon! Very good follow.
