2006 National Showcase
Ryan Mikalsen is a 2007 left hand pitcher from Sachem East HS, residing in Farmingville, NY. He has a good pitcher's body... long and rangy with a 6'4" 180 lb. frame, quite projectable with lots of room to fill out. Mikalsen is a long way from being as good as he will be, in terms of raw stuff. However, his pitchability and feel for the ball are very good, which combined with his chance for physical projection had him ranked #68 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. He has a short, clean arm action with what today is average arm speed. His effort leve is easy and as he gains strength expect that arm speed and strength to continue to increase. His mechanics are pretty good, with a bit of a open front side and some cross body stride direction. Mikalsen does create some front side leverage with is lead arm, another factor in his favor as he gains power in the coming years. Most impressive with his three pitch mix was that Mikalsen was down in the zone with everything and showed good command with all three pitches. His fastball topped at 87 and sat in the mid-80s. His 68 mph curveball had good rolling action and his 75 mph change-up had some fading action. Again, he was able to pitch down in the zone with all three and can get a lot of balls put in play, staying away from the middle of the plate and getting ground balls. There is a lot to work with for a pitching coach with Mikalsen. He is going to continue to develop in a D1 program and on the other side of his college career should be an opportunity to go out into pro ball, if he continues to develop along the path he is on.
