2006 Hawaii Showcase
Bucky Aona is a 2006 1B from Punahou HS, residing in Kapolei, HI with a 6'2" 260 lb. frame. Named to the Top Prospect Team, Aona is a physically strong player and though he is big and has some softness around the middle, he has a powerful and somewhat lively body. On offense Aona displays excellent bat speed and is able to put his considerable strength to use. His swing is short and with his bat speed and raw power combination, Aona is a legitimate power prospect. The most dangerous power hitters have short swings and plus bat speed, and Aona fits that description. His natural swing keeps him in the middle of the field and though he is an aggressive hitter, he is not particularly so to the pull side. Aona's ability to hit for average and power are both strong. Aona is a 7.73 runner. On defense he has soft hands and pretty quiet movements around the bag. Aona is not going to win any gold gloves, but he is good in his stationary area and sees the ball well from his infielders. He is not flashy or an actions oriented fielder, but he makes plays and picks the ball well on his backhand side. At best Aona is a serviceable thrower of the baseball, it is possible we saw him with a sore arm. Aona is a D1 caliber offensive player and would be an asset to most college programs. There is a college program that would be happy to pick up his bat in the spring signing period. His bat is also a draftable commodity in the mid to late rounds.
