Shawn Zarraga is a 2007 right hand hitting catcher from Trinity Christian HS, residing in Boynton Beach, FL. Zarraga has a powerful, strong build on a pretty well developed 6'2" 210 lb. frame. The interesting thing about his body type is that even though he is strong and quite developed, there is a lot of life in his body. Zarraga performed very well and was ranked #45 among PG National Top 100 position players and could have been ranked higher. Zarraga is a quality catcher with a middle of the line-up bat. He has plus bat speed and is an aggressive hitter, with a lively bat. Zarraga showed excellent pitch recognition and when he swung, there was ancitipation that he was going to hit the ball very hard. At contact the ball made a loud crack off his bat, different than most players and an indication of his strength, extension and accelaration through contact. Zarraga produces easy power and made a lot of solid contact. Behind the plate Zarraga is also a player that is fun to watch. He is a high energy catcher and he plays above his tools. Zarraga is a good receiver and shifts well, with good agility. He sort of sets up high like Mike Matheny and did a masterful job of blocking and controlling balls in the dirt. He snapped backpicks very well and was always looking for outs on the bases. His raw arm strength is average but it plays better than that. Really there was not a lot that Zarrago didn't look like he could do. Not only is he a physical hitter and good catcher, he is a good athlete, evident with his 4.33 home/1st time and 6.97 60. He is a top tier D1 prospect and should also draw significant scout attention this spring. If he were a left hand hitter, he would be talked about as one of the top catchers in this draft class... which he is, regardless.
