Hughes is a tall and athletic 6-6, 205 lb right handed pitcher from Texas with lots of natural arm strength. He throws from a free wheeling delivery with an extended low 3/4's arm slot and really doesn't have much feel for his release point. Right now much of his delivery only serves to throw off his balance and doesn't help him deliver or control the ball. Hughes still threw 84-85 mph and with his arm speed and body and present mechanical issues you have to believe that there is a ton more velocity in his arm waiting to get out. Hughes did show the ability to spin the ball, too. His 72 mph curveball had a big sweeping break and was an effective pitch when he put it in the strike zone. This young man could really blossom with some adjustments and become a big time power pitcher. One thing going for him is that Hughes is a very good athlete who is a 7.08 runner at his size who shows his arm strength during infield and outfield drills. He should be able to make adjustments as a pitcher in an athletic sense. Follow him closely.
