Volz is a big and imposing 6-4, 210 lb right handed pitcher from Texas. He looks bigger on the mound to hitters because of his pitching style. Volz has a long arm action in back with a little bit of wrap and comes through to a long, extended mid 3/4's release point with a bit of cross body action. Volz's arm speed is excellent and he gets very good power running life on a 88-91 mph fastball. The best running action is at the lower fastball velocities when Volz comes over the ball. We've heard of Volz touching 95 mph before and we believe it. He's also a football player who looks like he's done upper body weight work, so a different workout routine or a different date without football just around the corner might immediately produce a mid-90's fastball with life. Volz's curveball is also a quality pitch at 73-76 mph with a big, hard bite to it. Volz is a good overall athlete who threw 88 mph during infield drills and showed impressive mobility as a third baseman on defense. He also has some pop in his bat. We're looking forward to seeing Volz throw away from football next spring, when he could be among the hardest throwers in the country. Volz is also an excellent student.
