LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2003 National Showcase
Poterson is a strong, mature athlete with some serious pop in his bat from the left side of the plate. Based on his hitting potential alone, Poterson compares strongly with some of the high school bats who were picked near the top of the 2003 draft. Not only did Poterson show the bat speed and loft power to hit the ball 400 feet with wood, he really impressed us with his polish and ability to keep his hands back and adjust his swing. Facing one of the top pitchers at the showcase, he was frozen by a quality slider one pitch, then raked an 89 mph fastball into the gap on the next. Later that game he reversed the pattern, taking a high velocity fastball, then lining a good slider over the shortstop’s head. That’s good work with wood. What position Poterson ends up at is an open question. He played first base and caught in Lincoln and with 7.05 speed and a very playable arm, he could undoubtedly man the corner outfield positions as well. Behind the plate is where Poterson might end up. He showed a good arm and some cat like quickness. There's no question as to whether he's tough enough. With time he could become a MLB caliber catcher. He’s also smooth defensively at first base. Another aspect of Poterson’s game we respected was his emotional approach to competing. It’s the kind of approach that is a leadership example to one’s teammates and probably hacks off the opponents frequently. We really like the way he plays and of course the way he hits. He rates right up there with the best bats in the class of "04".
