Garrett Smith -- Smith is a junior right handed pitcher/third baseman from Virginia. He has a strong, solid 5-11 body with good strength throughout. Smith looks like a catcher and his arm action in the field looks like a catcher’s, too. From the mound, Smith threw a steady 81-82 mph with good boring action in command from a high ¾’s release point. Smith has to tilt his head and upper body a bit to get his arm through but it didn’t seem to affect his command. He didn’t show any type of breaking ball during 4 innings of work but did throw both a change up and knuckleball. Mostly he just pounded the strike zone with a good sinking fastball. His arm strength appeared better in the field, so his mechanics might be affecting his pitching velocity right now. At the plate, Smith has lots of waggle and motion prior to his swing but gets set well and has an aggressive, compact swing. Smith is looking to pull the ball and showed us some loft power potential. He is a sound defensive player and does everything aggressively.
