David Stewart is a 2007 left hand hitting outfielder/left hand pitcher from St. John Vianney HS, residing in St. Louis, MO. Stewart certainly grabs your attention with his body. He is big, strong, and powerful, yet quite athletic with his 6'6" 218 lb. frame that still has room to fill out. Players like Adam Dunn come to mind when you see Stewart. Not only is he big, but Stewart can play and has hitting skills that spell trouble for pitchers in the future. He was ranked #21 among PG National Top 100 position players and has a chance to be included in the conversations about the top prospects in the '07 high school draft class. Stewart is not only a big, powerful hitter with power to all fields, but he can hit. His swing looks big upon first look but upon further inspection it is quite short to the ball. He can overpower a ball or he can miss the barrel and still hit the ball hard. Stewart has as line drive swing and never has to try to hit for power, he already brings it to the plate. That line drive swing and short path to the ball are indicators that he will not only hit for power, but also for good average. The ball jumps off his bat with a flick of his very strong hands. His power can be classified as easy power. Stewart is a good athlete and it shows in the outfield. He flows well to the ball and has feel for the defensive side of the game. He has a good arm and a quick release. With his long strides, he can gain some ground, though his underway speed is much better than his burst speed. Either corner is good for him, though he could be a very good left fielder. Stewart also pitches and does so from an over the top slot, with a pretty easy arm action. His fastball was 87-88 and pretty heavy with good down angle. He also showed a slow 63-65 mph curveball and decent feel of a change-up. Stewart showed that he has some pitchability. He ran 4.87 home/1st with a 7.18 laser timed 60 yard dash. His raw power and ability to hit will put him on the short list of top high school 1st basemen for this upcoming draft and if he performs in front of crosscheckers this spring, he will go quite high in the draft.
