2004 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase
Ryan Wood is a 6'4", 175 lb. right handed pitcher/shortstop from Woodbridge, Virginia, who was one of the top prospects at the event. He has a "Robin Yount" type build, and is a 7.12 sixty runner with very athletic actions. Scouts are spilt on whether Ryan's future is on the mound, with pro level life on his pitches, or in the field. At shortstop he shows pro level arm strength during the games with very quick transfers and exceptional balance in his movements. His feet should continue to develop. Ryan has plus range to both sides with pro level arm strength from the hole. On the mound, he showed a 91 mph fastball, 73 mph curveball, and an 84 mph change up. He knows how to pitch and has a very polished delivery with pro level arm speed. He has an online stride with plus potential on fastball velocity and life, and plus potential with his curveball. A right handed hitter with a tall and narrow stance, Ryan has an open to closed approach with good bat speed. He's very quick to the ball with strong hands and the strength to trigger very late. He takes a short, quick path to the ball with present raw power, and should continue to develop strength and quickness with pro level projection tools. Ryan has the potential to be a very high draft pick.
