2006 National Showcase
Ryan Mathews is a 2007 right hand hitting corner infielder from Boone HS, residing in Orlando, FL. He has a very nice 6'4" 180 lb. frame that is long, lean, athletic, and quite projectable in terms of room to fill out and gain strength in the coming years. A talented and still developing player, Mathews ranked #36 among PG National Top 100 position players. He is a very intriguing hitter, with bat speed and a lively, whippy swing. His hands are good, keeping him inside the ball and he showed a flat swing plane. Mathews did a great job of keeping the barrel in the zone for a long time, resulting in hard contact all over the field. His future power potential is considerably better than his present day juice. Over at the hot corner Mathews showed a very solid arm and hands that should allow him to be at least an average defensive player, at either corner. With his combination of size and athleticism (ran 6.90, laser timed 60), Mathews has a lot of exciting development ahead of him.
