17u National Elite Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2

Cameron Johnson (2023, Upper Marlboro, Md.) got the ball for the Mid-Atlantic Red Sox and was, to put it bluntly, electric in his time on the mound. An extremely physical lefty who is listed at 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, Johnson’s strength and athleticism is certainly on display. The arm speed is better than plus, and he was able to consistently miss bats before running out of gas a bit in the later innings. His fastball peaked at 97 mph and was consistently 94-96 mph early before gradually tapering off into the low-90s, with explosive arm side life that allows him to dominate when in the zone with the pitch. His fastball command was just okay in this outing, with more control than command, missing up a fair bit as he tended to rush down the slope early on, but what made this instance unique was his ability to go right to his slider when his fastball command eluded him. There was an individual sequence in the 1st inning where Johnson got down 2-0 by missing with fastballs, evened the count at 2-2 with a pair of vicious sliders for strikes, and then painted 96 for strike three. There’s a level of self-awareness shown there, to go to your secondary stuff when the fastball isn’t there rather than forcing it. The slider is in the upper-70s with sharp, late, two-plane bite that he was able to throw for strikes and for chase, projecting to be a plus pitch long term. The upside here is enormous, and Johnson will be monitored as a guy with first round upside for next year.
