The Indiana Bulls 17U National and East Coast Sox 17U National locked into quite a pitcher’s duel on Saturday morning, in a game East Coast won 2-1. Matthew Heiberger (2023, Birmingham, Ala.) got the start and the win, as the slenderly-built lefty allowed just one run over five strong innings, punching out 7 and throwing 61% strikes. Heiberger has a pretty simplified operation on the mound, with a quick load into his back hip and a short, closed stride downhill. It’s a mid-high three-quarter slot release with plane to the bottom of the zone, up to 90 mph with the fastball while settling into the upper-80’s. There’s more in there as he continues developing his body and lower half usage, and the ingredients really project. He showed good feel for varying his breaker looks, mixing in slower slurvy looks along with sharper true tilt looks as well as a usable changeup. An Alabama commit, Heiberger’s upside as a projection lefty is certainly there.
