2017 14u PG Select Baseball Festival Rosters | 14u National Showcase Top Prospects
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The first installment of the 14u National Showcase brought over 200 participants to JetBlue Park on August 5-6. The event gathered a collection of talent spanning across the country, five players from the Dominican Republic and two from Aruba.
Sixteen teams were split up to conduct workouts and participate in game action over the two days, with some impressive numbers posted by several of the participants.
“Having as much talent as we did down here for the first year of the event, we hope this event continues to grow and become a staple of the 14u age group,” Perfect Game’s National Crosschecker Jheremy Brown said. “We came into the showcase with a list that we added to players to consider for the Festival. We got to see how everyone stacked up and we wanted to try and line it up to bring the best 40 14u players down to Fort Myers.”
With spots to be filled for the 14u PG Select Baseball Festival taking place Labor Day weekend, nine participants performed well enough to garner spots in the nationally televised game that will take place September 3. The announcement for the rosters were conducted late Sunday night on the MLB Roundtrip show on MLB Network Radio and SiriusXM.
Two righthanders from South Florida, both committed to Miami, topped the velocity charts at 89 miles an hour and earned spots on the East roster.
Nicholas Regalado (2020, Miami Lakes, Fla.) and Carlos Rodriguez (2021, Miami, Fla.) each check in as highly rated prospects in the high school classes of 2020 and 2021 rankings, with Regalado as the 74th-ranked player overall in 2020 rankings and Rodriguez ranked third in 2021.
Bryant Colon (2021, Greenacres, Fla.) has had a strong summer on the travel ball circuit as the Miami commit batted .462 (30-for-65) in 26 tournament games. The outfielder will now get to display his tools for the East squad as he earned a spot on the roster.
Mario Zabala (2020, San Juan, Puerto Rico) blew away the competition in the 60-yard dash, clocking in at 6.5 seconds, nearly three tenths of a second quicker than the next closest time. Zabala also displayed a strong throwing arm from the outfield, registering a 90 mph throw and was also selected for the East roster.
Erick Pena (2021, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) will provide some more international flair to the game. One of the more physical players at the 14u National, Pena put his loud tool set on display in all facets, running a 6.83 60-yard dash and throwing 90 mph from the outfield while also putting his loose and easy lefthanded swing on display with plenty of leverage off the barrel.
Dorian Gonzalez (2021, Miami, Fla.) tested highly in terms of velocity on the mound, in the infield and the outfield and showed advanced offensive ability from the left side of the plate in batting practice and in games. His versatility will serve the East squad well, as he too earned a spot.
Noah Smith (2021, Chicago, Ill.) showed his speed with a 6.84 60-yard dash and flashed a strong arm across the infield with an 84 mph reading, ranking in the top 5 among the participants. His all-around performance earned him a spot on the West roster.
Issac Rodriguez (2021, Murrieta, Calif.) displayed his versatility, featuring soft hands and fluid actions at shortstop to go along with posting a 1.96 pop time behind the plate. Along with a strong showing with the bat, his performance warranted a spot on the West team.
Jordan Lawlar (2021, Irving, Texas) registered the second fastest 60-yard dash at 6.78 seconds, and impressed with the bat from the right side in game action. Lawlar was a top performer for the Dallas Tigers at the 14u WWWBA National Championship, hitting .400 in 20 at-bats earlier this summer. His performances were good enough to pick up a spot on the West roster.
