2005 Midwest Top Prospect Showcase
Richard "Jon" Gulbransen is a very strong 6-0, 195 lb left handed pitcher from Wisconsin who had a very impressive showcase. He throws from a high 3/4's release point with a long and low arm swing in back and very good extension out front. Gulbransen has a very fast arm and it works smoothly. He has good balance in his delivery. Gulbransen's fastball was 84-86 mph with some late life to it. He threw a 79 mph change up that was a bit hard compared to his fastball but is a good starting point to develop the pitch. Gulbransen's curveball was a sharp 71 mph downer curveball that had a shorter slider like break. Aside from his raw stuff, the most impressive thing about Gulbransen was his approach to pitching. He worked very fast and was aggressive about throwing strikes and attacking hitters early in the count. Gulbransen is a good overall athlete who can field his position and swing the bat with some power. He is a very good student as well. Very good follow.
