2006 Northeast Top Prospect Showcase
Derek Dietrich is a 2007 SS/3B/P with a 6'2'', 185 lb. frame from Parma, OH who attends St. Ignatius HS. Derek has a strong athletic build and is one of the top prospects in the class for 2008. He could be an early draft pick or an immediate two-way contributor for a highest-level college program. At the plate Derek has tremendous bat speed and raw power potential. His offensive upside is huge and he has all the tools you look for in a hitter. In the infield Derek has outstanding infield actions and project as an MLB third baseman eventually. His arm strength (94) is well above the major league average. He throws from a 3/4 arm slot on the mound with a short loose arm action. His arm is electic on the mound and if he weren't such a good IF prospect he would have a big future on the mound. He has an effortless delivery and the ball really jumps on hitters. Derek is a strong student that should attract the attention of many major league teams this spring.
