Playoff day at the WWBA 16u National Championship began in earnest on Wednesday, with lots of excellent action being played through the day.
Dillon Haines (2021, St. Augustine, Fla.) got the ball for 5 Star National 16u Burress in their playoff matchup with Scorpions 2022 Founders Club, and was outstanding, though 5 Star would go onto lose the game. A well-built lefthander, Haines is committed to Stetson, and is one of the handful of higher-end, young-for-grade 2021’s in this event. Haines threw 4 scoreless frames, scattering 3 hits and 2 walks while punching out 4 in the process. He generates good angle to the plate and pounds the zone to both sides with his fastball, touching 89 mph and living in the upper 80’s. He shows the ability to manipulate his breaking ball as well as turn over a good changeup, and the 3-pitch mix and command give him a pretty good chance to be an immediate impact arm at Stetson.
